Mark Olson

Mark Olson, Interim Director of the Cambridge Symphony, brings a wealth of experience as a conductor, music performer, and music educator to the podium. He is currently the Assistant Director of Bands at Harvard University, co-conducting the Harvard Wind Ensemble, the Harvard Summer Pops Band, and providing guidance to the Harvard University Band. He also directs the Sunday Jazz Band.

Mark began his music career teaching music in public schools in Minnesota. In 1997 he began graduate studies at the University of Minnesota with a concentration in conducting. After earning an M.A. Degree in Music Education, Olson was appointed Visiting Professor and Interim Director of Bands at Graceland University, a position he held for two years prior to arriving on the east coast. Today he often serves as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator for bands and orchestras.

Olson received his B.M. degree from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, and M.A. degree in Music Education from the University of Minnesota where he is currently completing a Ph.D. in Music. He has been a conducting student of Craig Kirchhoff and J. Robert Hanson He has participated as a conducting student in clinics taught by H. Robert Reynolds, John Painter, Mallory Thompson, and Allen McMurry. As a trumpet performer, Olson has been a member of various bands and orchestras including the Charles River Wind Ensemble, the Mankato and Austin Symphony Orchestras, and Winona Brass Band. He has studied trumpet with David Baldwin, Gary Bordner, and J. Robert Hanson.
